Do your worries ever reach dragon-like proportions? If so, then Taking Flight has just the show for you. A poignant, insightful story about coping with your dragons and learning to face anxieties devised by award-winning picture book writer Kathryn Cave.

Based on the children’s book of the same name, You’ve Got Dragons is a delightful tale for young children, their families and carers, headed to Pegasus Theatre on October 18.

With live, original music, this highly visual, sensitive production is a humorous and touching exploration of the dragons we all face.

It’s also fully accessible, intergenerational, and features creative captioning, British Sign Language and audio description.

Director Elise Davison says: I’d adapted one of Kathryn’s books before and after we first met she sent me You’ve Got Dragons as a suggestion to put on the stage.

“The book completely hit home with me and it felt like the perfect story to take on.

“At Taking Flight we make bold, unusual theatre productions that place D/deaf and disabled non-disabled performers centre stage.

“For me it was about providing a vocabulary for parents and teachers to talk to children about mental health in a way that wasn’t scary or taboo. I was very conscious that this play wasn’t going to change the world but it might just start some conversations that needed to happen.

“I’d never formally adapted a book before so I worked with Samuel Bees (who is also in the show) to create the play. The cast is an integrated cast of D/deaf and hearing actors. Stephanie Back and Roger Hudson are Deaf, Charlie Raine is hard of hearing and Sam Bees is hearing,” she continues.

“This autumn we are taking big steps out into the wider world with two tours into England and a trip to Germany, where we will not only showcase our work but have been invited as an example of best practice in accessible theatre.

“We’ve had such wonderful feedback on our previous tours, and families have said that while the show works for all generations, their children were completely mesmerised.

“Parents are impressed that we are able to tackle the issues around childhood mental health with such a lightness of touch. It really heart-warming to see how much entire families enjoy the show.”

You’ve Got Dragons is at Pegasus Theatre on October 18 at 5pm. pegasustheatre.org.uk or call 01865 812 150.

The show is suitable for young children, schools and families, and is fully accessible to D/deaf, Hard of Hearing, blind or Visually Impaired, sighted and hearing children and adults.
