Walking around Charlotte Orr‘s new solo exhibition at The North Wall, it becomes immediately apparent that this retrospective of her life and work is hugely personal.
From paintings and prints of Northern Ireland (her father hailed from Belfast), work inspired by The Ashmolean, her time in Berlin where she moved to become an artist, Falmouth‘s beaches where she did her degree, maps of an eco friendly Oxford, childhood holiday memories of Cornwall, scenes from Blenheim, a piece from her exhibition at the Jam Factory in 2019, and so it goes on.
From prints to paintings, materials to sewing, embroidery and calligraphy, her fascination with mixed textiles and media continued unabated during lockdown.
Enormously prolific during those dark months, by the end Charlotte had enough work to furnish a full solo exhibition, resulting in Sunday Afternoon at the North Wall, which runs until the end of this week. (24th July).
Dedicated to her father who passed away a few months ago, Charlotte worked in quick succession as a way of processing both her grief and the pandemic, working largely from memory. She continued teaching art and design at City Of Oxford College online and spent the rest of her time creating the new works we can now see adorning the walls.
“There was nothing else to distract me so in a way lockdown was good for me. It gave me more time to concentrate on my own work but it was also a sad time because my father passed away, so this exhibition is dedicated to him. He wanted to come and see it for himself but died before it opened,” Charlotte says.
So how does she feel about hosting another solo show so soon after her successful stint at The Jam Factory. “I think it’s an achievement, and I’m really proud of it,” the 30 year-old says hesitantly, “and I’ve dedicated it to my father Michael who was quite involved in the planning of the exhibition and was hoping to be here for the whole thing.”
