What an epic competition we have for you! Win a meal for two at The Mole Inn in Toot Bladon on Valentine’s Day with three courses and a bottle of wine!
What’s the occasion? Apart from it being the most romantic day of the year, we are celebrating the new appointment of head chef Dave Phillips who took over the kitchens this week.
Raring to go, with an impressive CV to match, Dave has worked at Le Manoir, Chez Nico as well as locally at The Dashwood in Kirtlington, No1 Ship Street in Oxford, Killingworth Castle in Wootton and The Duke in Woodstock, he excels at Modern British food and pub classics.
So why The Mole? “I used to come to The Mole as a young’ un with my dad and it brings back really fond memories,” he says. “My dad was an amazing cook and really inspired me to go into cooking, so it’s a really nostalgic location for me,” he says.
“I’m really excited to be taking over. It’s a great pub and deserves to have great food so taking over as head chef his has really motivated me.
“It’s good to be planning new menus and researching dishes again, going through old recipes, getting in touch with suppliers and taking responsibility,” he smiles.
As for the menu, Dave will be gently reintroducing his own dishes to the menu, but you will be first in line with his Valentine’s menu, if you win.
Think amuse bouche of Jerusalem artichoke veloute and truffle oil, homemade bread and whipped salted butter. Then Cornish crab linguine for starters or slow cooked blade of beef with creamy mash, savoy cabbage and Roscoff onions, followed by creme brulee with raspberry gel and shortbread, and then petit fours or chocolate truffles.
Veggies can enjoy Golden Cross goats cheese salad with pickled chicory, candied walnuts and a burnt orange dressing and then the herbed gnocchi with king oyster mushrooms, spinach, creme fraiche and pecorino.
