Set against a background of extreme economic hardship in Weimar-era interwar Berlin and the rise of the far-right, a vibrant cultural scene, bursting with abundant queer, Jewish and generally fabulous performers, is thriving and will burst onto stage at The Jericho Tavern tomorrow night (Wednesday).
As if that wasn’t enough it will be introducing a Special Guest: Alpha Bites, all the way from sunny Brighton.
The show features Dr Magnus Hirschfield’s Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, who is spearheading the drive to understand, accept, and celebrate queer identities, and prominent artistic figures from around the world.
Gay English authors Christopher Isherwood and W.H. Auden, flock to Berlin’s bars to seek out its illicit thrills. Meanwhile cultural icons like Marlene Dietrich have been propelled from the Berlin theatre scene into international stardom.
As they said at the ELDORADO, an infamous restaurant catering to those who didn’t always play by society’s’ gender rules: “HIER IST’S REICHSTIG! – Here, it’s alright.”
The same could be said for The Oxfordshire Drag Collective who brings you this quirky and eclectic celebration of queer in the finest way possible – a cabaret!
With a different line-up for every show, you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled – you never know what to expect. From lip sync to poetry, to burlesque to stand up- anything goes at this show!
SPUDS (Strange People Undertake a Drag Show) was created to provide a space for local performers to experiment, push boundaries, and deliver brand new off-the-wall material. With a diverse mash-up of performance styles, there’s something for everyone to enjoy, so come and celebrate the growing Oxford scene!
