Local Oxford comedy club Jericho Comedy has just been named one of the ‘Top 6 comedy nights in the UK’ and winning a national comedy industry award.

The ‘Chortle Comedy Award’ recognises the best comedians and venues across the UK. This is the second year Jericho Comedy has won the award for ‘the best comedy night in the Midlands and the east of England’.

“Everyone at Oxfordshire Mind is delighted that Jericho Comedy have won a Chortle Award. Thank you for providing us with humour when we most need it.”

Jericho Comedy frontman Harry Househam said: “It means so much that people voted for Jericho Comedy as best comedy night. We have some stunningly good acts and a really great audience who come along to the Jericho Cafe and Common Ground week after week. We wouldn’t have been able to win without a really loyal group of regulars”

Harry also announced that the next Comedy Gala will take place on Jan 16 2021 at the Oxford Playhouse. The Comedy Gala in recent years has included comedians including Nish Kumar, Rachel Parris, Ed Gamble, Sara Barron, and of course Jericho Comedy’s own Alex Farrow and Harry Househam and raises thousands every year for Oxfordshire Mind.

Jericho Comedy has been running for the past four and a half years performing stand-up comedy, improv, and even immersive murder mysteries.

Their gigs include regular weekly Saturday night shows at the Jericho Café and Common Ground Workspace, regular drag shows in the Jericho Tavern, and one offs at stranger venues like churches, cemeteries and Leicester Cathedral, not to mention Oxford Townhall Courthouse, Blackwell’s Bookshop and the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. They also raise vast sums of money for local mental health charity Oxfordshire Mind.

Dan Knowles CEO of Oxfordshire Mind was ecstatic to hear of the win. “Everyone at Oxfordshire Mind is delighted that Jericho Comedy have won a Chortle Award. Jericho Comedy are fantastic, long term supporters of Oxfordshire Mind. Through their weekly gigs and the Comedy Gala they host every January they have raised over £70,000 to support people with mental health problems in Oxfordshire.

“Thank you to Jericho Comedy for providing us with humour when we most need it.”

Currently due to COVID-19, Jericho Comedy is on a limited hiatus but plans to return bigger and better than ever as soon as they are able.

Current future shows involve insect themed stand-up comedy at the Natural History Museum with live insect handling, more murder mysteries on moving coaches (Murder on the National Express) and lots more to be announced.

To help self isolators, Jericho Comedy are also partnering up with the UK’s largest online comedy only streaming platform ‘Next Up Comedy’ to bring those trapped at home some exciting homegrown content with a month’s free subscription. All details can be found in the next few days on the Jericho Comedy website.

“It’s a really tough time for freelance performers and comedians,” Harry went on “but we can’t wait to put this Chortle Award to good use to keep providing audiences with excellent comedy on stage, and online before we’re back with our weekly shows”

“We’re keen to give people something to look forward to with some really fun interesting events to go to! In the mean time we’ll be doing what we can to brighten people’s day and recommend great online shows.”
