Matthew Clulee is one of Oxford’s favourite contemporary hairdressers, with 19 years in Oxford and a newly refurbished salon to write home about.
And you can win a consultation and cut at his revamped salon to one lucky winner as part of our Mother’s Day giveaway!
His Ship Street site is a deluxe, urban, upmarket salon, a bustling hub for all those in the know.
Matt and his skilled team are always one step ahead, which is why they were chosen to do hair at Paris and Oxford Fashion Week and are often voted best salon in numerous hair magazines. They recently styled the hair of girl band All Saints when they performed in Oxford recently.
“It’s always about listening to your clients, to what they want,” Matt says, “and then providing that experience.”
And what do they want? “To book online and for us to be more flexible, so we have extended our opening times to seven days a week, with several later slots available until 8pm.
“We also want to raise the bar in terms of the luxury element. People want something new so we have made the salon more of an overall experience by introducing new services and treatments.
“Many of our clients more want hair and scalp treatments. They are much more interested in their hair and how to keep it healthy and youthful. They know that y enhancing the health of your scalp is the key to hair growth. So we have a whole new series of treatments which are relaxing, rejuvenating and inventive. We want to offer something really unique.”
It means that clients can now come en masse and enjoy an afternoon there, or come after work and relax with with Prosecco or a G&T, while his male clients may enjoy a beer with their hair cut.
For those in a rush there is availability for walk-ins: “We need to be flexible for the last minute clients who don’t always have the time to plan so far in advance. Because time is money for us all so we have to be thorough and efficient,” he says.
“But our staff are our best attribute.”
Chemotherapy workshops on Wednesday morning are complementary when Matt and team provide advice and practical help for people that are losing, or have lost, their hair due to chemotherapy.
“We are an established business, an independent, and Oxford is such a wonderful centre of history, culture, entertainment and hospitality. It’s a very vibrant inclusive city.”
And with an in-house therapist on hand, Matt is also offering a nail paint and polish, or half hour back massage for the winner. The prize must be taken on a Wednesday at a date to be decided.
