As Halloween approaches, the Pitt Rivers Museum is busy stocking up on its Witch in a Bottle gin.
The spirit, created for the museum by distillers Foxdenton, was inspired by a small and simple glass bottle on display at the museum – which is said to contain a witch.
The ‘silvered and stoppered’ bottle was collected by folklorist and archaeologist Margaret Murray in 1915 in Hove, Sussex and dates back to the 1850s.
The witch bottle was acquired by the Pitt Rivers in 1926 and is displayed in the museum with its original, handwritten label. Supposedly obtained from an old lady who remarked that releasing the witch would unleash ‘a peck o’ trouble’, it’s an unusual tale, perfect for Halloween.
Given the warnings to Margaret Murray when she collected the bottle, there are no plans to ever open it. But now the museum has made a bottle you can open – a bewitchingly delicious Gin.
Pitt Rivers Museum‘s Witch in a Bottle Gin is made from a blend of botanicals including lemon peel and lime flower oil, and best served with tonic water, ice and a slice of lemon. It’s available in 70cl and 5cl bottles at the Pitt Rivers Museum shop on South Parks Road, Oxford and also online
