Oxford’s most famous pub The Eagle and Child is back on the market after plans to convert it into a hotel and restaurant fell through.
The historic 17th century pub in St Giles, favoured by the likes of Tolkien and CS Lewis, was under offer as a pub/hotel business incorporating the uppers and extending the ground floor out.
However, since the deal fell through the project has reverted to plans for The Eagle and Child to once again reopen as a ground and basement pub with the upper levels being used by St John’s College, who owns the building.
The Eagle and Child, also fondly referred to as also known as Bird and Brat or Bird and Baby dates back to 1650 and has a plaque inside commemorating the writers’ get-togethers.
Known as The Inklings, they would regularly meet up with other academics at the Grade II listed pub, which was a firm Oxford tourist attraction with fans visiting from all over the world, until it shut in March 2020 during Covid,
The pub is owned by St John’s College and Savills is now ideally looking for “experienced hospitality operators” to take it on.
Although there is already considerable interest “rent offers are still invited for a new lease.”
