The Hare in Milton-Under-Wychwood has been bought and refurbed by Matt and Katie Beamish, who also own Kingham Plough.

The duo, who took over The Kingham Plough from Emily Watkins in 2020 have now added The Hare to their portfolio and opened its doors this week for the first time.

The new look Hare

“It was too good an opportunity to turn down,” Matt says. “Very few freehold or freesite pubs come up for sale in this neck of the woods and it’s such a lovely site so we went for it.

“We have been looking for a second site for a while, now that The Kingham Plough is up and running, and we are delighted with The Hare. It’s such a great local village pub and Milton-Under-Wychwood is the best village. We just felt that we could really put our stamp on it.

“As soon as we went and had a look we knew it was the perfect match for us, but it will be quite different to The Plough.

The pair bought The Hare in August and Katie has been in charge of furnishing and decorating it, her flair for interior design evident throughout. The extensive garden has also been landscaped.

Able to do the pub up during Covid, the team there is now raring to go and has already opened its doors to its customers this week.

Menu-wise there will is a daily fish specials board, their seafood brought up every morning from Brixham for dishes such as John Dory with samphire and clams, or turbot with a saffron bisque, as well as dishes from steaks, pies, ravioli, burgers and salads on the main menu, all concocted under the helm of head chef, Matt Dare.

“Good chefs are like hens teeth but Matt is superb and he’s been working really well with Jonny Pons at Kingham Plough, comparing suppliers and recipes,” Matt says.

With their catering business The Potted Goose coming later this summer and three weddings already booked, Matt and Katie have certainly got their hands full.

“Yes but we are enjoying it. We are both from this area and know all the surrounding villages. Our family and friends are here and with the Kingham Plough up-and-running, we are more relaxed about things now,” Matt says.

“But this is our baby, it’s what we do. So we do question things and then we do them anyway,” he grins, “because we have a great team and two cracking pubs now. We love them to bits.”

And with The Kingham Plough being one of two pubs listed nationally in the Estrella awards http://551.326.mywebsitetransfer.com/kingham-is-oxfordshires-new-gastropub-mecca-with-two-entries-in-the-estrella-awards-top50-gastropubs-list/ the future looks bright for The Hare.
