If your self-isolation reading list is running a bit low, make sure you enter our competition to win signed copies of Lucy Atkins’ novels Magpie Lane and The Night Visitor.

We have two sets of both books to give away.

Released last week, Magpie Lane is the latest domestic noir offering from the Oxford author and the first set in her hometown.

It tells the story about the eight-year-old daughter of an Oxford College Master vanishing in the middle of the night. Police turn to the Scottish nanny, Dee, for answers. As Dee looks back over her time in the Master’s Lodging – an eerie and ancient house – a picture of a high achieving but dysfunctional family emerges: Nick, the fiercely intelligent and powerful father; his beautiful Danish wife Mariah, pregnant with their child; and the lost little girl, Felicity, almost mute, seeing ghosts and grieving for her dead mother.

But is Dee telling the whole story? Is her growing friendship with the eccentric house historian, Linklater, any cause for concern? And most of all, why is Felicity silent?

The Night Visitor tells the story of high-flying TV presenter and historian Professor Olivia Sweetman. As she stands before a crowd at the launch of her new bestseller she can barely pretend to smile. Her life has spiralled into deceit and if the truth comes out she’ll lose everything. Only one person Vivian Tester, knows what Olivia has done. The socially awkward sixty-year-old housekeeper of a Sussex manor, she has somehow become Olivia’s unofficial research assistant. But she has her own agenda… A compelling exploration of ambition, morality and deception which asks the question: how far would you go to save your reputation?
