Mechanical engineering graduate, ex-F1 engineer, founder and head brewer at Bicester’s The Wriggly Monkey Brewery, Luke Roberts, is obsessed with classic cars.

“We have special Beers called our ‘Sanction Series’. They are generally released on a Wednesday and sell out within hours”

Two years ago, he spotted a gap in the market for a brewery targeting the motoring world and The Wriggly Monkey Brewery was born.

Located at Bicester Heritage, regarded as a national hub of motoring excellence, The Wriggly Monkey Brewery takes inspiration from the worlds of engineering and motoring, combining traditional real ales and low alcohol brews with flair and a mischievous approach. Think the stiff-upper-lip of Winston Churchill mixed with the craic of James Hunt.

Luke says: “We have five permanent beers – Full Tilt Amber Ale which is a Great Taste Award 2019 winner, Super Sports Very Pale Ale, Ambassador India Pale Ale, Charabanc Ruby Ale and Gullwing Lager.

“We also have specials that come and go and are called our ‘Sanction Series’. They are generally released on a Wednesday and sell out within hours.

The brewery name was inspired by a Frazer Nash, a British sports car of the 1930s. A wriggly monkey is a very important part of the car.

Bicester Heritage, a 348-acre former WW2 RAF Bomber Training Station accommodates over 30 specialist motorsport businesses, so is the perfect location for the brewery.

Luke usually spends his summers at motoring events in the brewery’s specially adapted Armstrong Siddeley Racing Bar.

The Brewery Tap Room is also usually open to the public with Food Truck Friday on the second and last Friday of every month, when a tasty food truck feeds hungry customers.

Although closed during lockdown, orders have still been coming in thick and fast.

Luke said: “It has been incredibly heart-warming to see our website come alive over the past few weeks and to see many of our Tap Room regulars become website regulars as we drop by their doorsteps each week.

For Father’s Day 2020 The Wriggly Monkey Brewery has come up with Luke’s dream present – a starter pack of their most popular beers, a big chunk of Chiltern Artisan biltong and a custom handmade-in-Britain limited edition Wriggly Monkey Brewery bottle opener.
