The new look The Double Red Duke

Husband and wife duo Sam and Georgie Pearman have taken on The Plough at Clanfield, and aim to reopen the historic Cotswolds pub with rooms as The Double Red Duke in 2021 after an extensive refurbishment.

Boasting 19 bedrooms and a menu centred around an open-fire kitchen, they have recruited award-winning chef, butcher, restauranteur and food writer Richard Turner of Hawksmoor and Pitt Cue fame to work with Sam Pearman, and Head Chef Richard Sandiford.

The Double Red Duke is the latest addition to the Pearman’s Country Creatures portfolio, and sits alongside their existing Oxfordshire pubs The Swan in Ascott Under Wychwood and The Chequers at Churchill.

There will be a 14-seater kitchen counter where guests can enjoy eating at the heart of the action, watching the chefs cook over the fire

The 17th century Cotswold-stone, wisteria-clad coaching inn near Kelmscott, Witney and Bampton, is currently undergoing extensive restoration works, including a large refurbishment and extension of the current building for further hotel bedrooms, a larger dining space and bar, and a garden room leading out to the garden and Oxfordshire countryside.

Named after a character from local folklore, The Double Red Duke will soon consist of 19 bedrooms, decorated individually, as well as a warren of snugs, sitting rooms, and a 12-seat feasting room. The Garden Room can be hired for private parties.

As for the food, the menu will centre around cooking over fire, with an open grill at the heart of the kitchen.

The two Richards and Sam have created a menu where grilled meat and vegetables are the centrepiece, accompanied by a host of sides and small plates.

Guests can order from the menu and then eat wherever they choose – by the fireside in the snug, with family and friends in the feasting room, or in the bar.

There will also be a 14-seater kitchen counter where guests can enjoy eating at the heart of the action, watching the chefs directly cook over the fire.

Georgie Pearman will bring her signature style to the interiors, working with local and British designers and companies, mixing bespoke pieces with antiques.

The planned opening of The Double Red Duke is obviously subject to the current restrictions.
